Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “bayağı sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine demetlanmasıyla oluşan kısaltarak polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit lakırtııntısı ile başkası arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok adetda polipeptit zir birimi barındırır). Yapı taşı nüans peptitlerin kısaltarak, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, özge amino asite daima, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle demetlanır. Polipeptid mimarisına taşlıklan amino asitlerin her biri mimariya peptid demetlarıyla demetlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Averaj bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilindik en uzun polipeptit, takribî 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda bulunan “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine taşlıklan amino asitlere lakırtııntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lakırtııntı, bağ yapmamış, boydak amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin özge ucundaki boydak α-karboksil grubu olan lakırtııntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
